What is Diagnostic Medical Sonography?
At Swedish Institute, we’re proud to stay on top of trends in medical learning, and that’s one of the reasons we’ve recently launched enrollment for our diagnostic medical sonography program. We’ve received a few questions from our students, including the very basic: What is DMS?
What is DMS?
Diagnostic medical sonography (DMS) uses ultrasound to create an image of the inside of the body. A sonographer is an ultrasound technologist trained and certified to administer ultrasound images and deliver a preliminary impression of the results, which an imaging doctor later confirms.
Diagnostic medical sonography requires working closely with physicians and other healthcare professionals to understand what is happening to the body. A DMS works with other medical professionals to determine a diagnosis and set a treatment course.
Applications for Sonograms
Sonograms are one of the most commonly performed scans in a medical setting, and their use goes beyond what you might expect. Sonograms are most typically associated with pregnancy, often providing parents with the first look at their growing fetus.
However, sonograms are also used in many other fields, including examining organs, blood vessels, muscles, tissue, and other parts of the body’s inner workings. A DMS examines what is happening under the skin’s surface and can use a sonogram to see throughout the body. Often, these are some of the first tests performed in a hospital setting to determine the cause of issues and illnesses.
Becoming a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer
Working in diagnostic medical sonography requires education from an accredited institution and hands-on work in your future profession. Here at Swedish Institute, our two-year DMS program includes both in-class education and 1000 hours of practical training in externships across the city.
This comprehensive curriculum means that our DMS students spend time learning about health sciences and equipment use before starting to work in the field at hospitals, medical offices, and more. Once you’ve taken all your classes, you will be ready to attempt credentialing through the ARRT.
