Meet with financial aid department

Scheduling a time to meet with a financial aid counselor will help you sort out the costs of enrolling in your program of choice. If you’re a dependent student, we recommend bringing a parent or financially responsible guardian to the meeting.

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

The FAFSA is your gateway to learning if you qualify for financial aid and how much you will be responsible for. It also opens doors to other types of financial assistance, including student loans and any available scholarships offered by the institute. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Must be enrolled at least six credit hours per semester (half-time student) to qualify.
  • Apply for an FSA ID. If you are filing as a dependent student, one parent or legal financial guardian will also need to apply for their own FSA ID before you can begin completion of the FAFSA.
  • Complete the “student section” of the FAFSA.
  • If you’re a dependent student, your parent or legal guardian will need to complete the “parent section” of the FAFSA.
  • Use code #016914 when listing Swedish Institute as one of your colleges of choice. You can list up to 10 colleges, universities or institutions.

Important deadlines

There are two FAFSA applications currently open for upcoming enrollment. Here are the deadlines you need to know:

  • Winter Semester, 2019— Students who plan to enroll in the upcoming winter semester of 2019, you will need to fill out the 2018-2019 FAFSA now. Time is running out.
  • Summer and Fall, 2019— Students who plan to enroll in the summer or fall of 2019, you will need to fill out the 2019-2020 FAFSA. This application is open through June 30, 2019.

Options for financial aid

In addition to federal aid offered through the FAFSA, there are other options available to those who qualify, and these include:

  • New York State Grant—Tuition Assistance Program (TAP)— This income-based grant is available to students who qualify. To be eligible, the student must have a high school diploma from the United States or a GED equivalent, and must also meet income guidelines.
  • Institutional Scholarships— This academic-based scholarship is offered to students who meet specific academic guidelines.

Students may qualify for both TAP and an institutional scholarship depending on their eligibility.
