Personal Training

Personal Training study at Swedish Institute includes a two-semester Personal Training certificate program that can be completed full-time in eight months and an Advanced Personal Training Associate in Occupational Studies degree program that can be completed full-time in 16 months.

The Personal Training certificate program gives students the basic knowledge and skills they need to enter the field of fitness training including a strong foundation in anatomy, physiology, pathology, kinesiology and the biomechanics of exercise. Students learn to assess the physical condition of a client, design a training program and evaluate progress. They practice skills in the college’s own functional training facility as well as at internship experiences.
The Advanced Personal Training degree program provides advanced study in exercise testing, resistance training and performance enhancement techniques and adds coursework in marketing and managing a personal training business. Course units in health psychology, stress reduction, nutrition and wellness practices broaden the student’s understanding of the field and courses in technical mathematics and communications prepares the student for further education and professional development.

The Advanced Personal Training degree program takes full time students four semesters (16 months) to complete and part-time students eight semesters to complete (32 months). The Personal Training certificate program takes full-time students two semesters (eight months) to complete.

The Advanced Personal Training program was started in May 2011 and the Personal Training program in September 2012. Neither of these programs has graduates entering the field yet. When available, information about the percentage of graduates who completed the program within the normal time frame will be reported here.

PERSONAL TRAINING CAREERS

Both Personal Training programs prepare students for entry-level positions in gyms, health facilities or private practice.

Personal training certification is typically required to begin working. Most organizations encourage instructors to become certified personal trainers over time, and many require it. Getting certified by one of the top certification organizations is becoming increasingly important, especially for personal trainers who are interested in working with people who are injured or ill, or advising clients on general health. The standards of the knowledge, skills and abilities set forth for certification are established by professional organizations such as the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

The Advanced Personal Training program is a 61 semester-credit-hour program. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates receive an Associate in Occupational Studies degree. The Personal Training Certificate program is a 32 semester-credit-hour program that awards a certificate. Both programs are authorized by the New York State Board of Regents. Both programs are new and did not have any graduates during the reporting period of 7/1/2011 to 6/30/2012, as annually reported to Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC).

Once that information is available, it will be posted here, as well as reported to our accrediting body, the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC).
