Academic Support

The faculty and staff of Swedish Institute want to see students succeed. When any academic difficulties are experienced, students can go to the Office of Academic Support Services for help. The Office offers tutoring services, individual advising, and helpful seminars on how to learn and study. Swedish Institute offers its students ongoing support for academics, hands-on practice of techniques and professional development.

The Director of Academic Support is available to meet individually with students about their experience in the learning environment, and to provide options and direction about study skills or other study and learning issues.

Peer Tutoring

The Academic Support Office oversees a tutoring program that matches academically struggling students with upper class students who are tutors. A small fee is paid directly to the tutor by the student. Students may visit the Academic Support office to be matched by course material and time availability with a tutor.

Seminars

The Director of Academic Support Services is available to help students identify their individual learning styles, create strategies for studying, and deal with test anxiety. Workshops on these topics are held throughout the semester. Students can also make an appointment to meet individually with the Director.

Study Skills

This seminar addresses essential topics for building excellent study skills:

  • How do I remember all this STUFF???
  • Getting great notes
  • Effective, productive studying
  • Where do I find enough time???
  • Taking tests

This seminar covers classroom preparation, how memory works, memory techniques for classroom and study, as well as effective note-taking techniques.

Also covers time management and scheduling; how to best study from your notes, textbooks and handouts; useful test-taking strategies.

THIS SEMINAR IS 2 ½ HOURS. (Interested students must sign up in advance at the reception desk.)

Learning Styles

This seminar allows you to individualize your study approach to match your individual learning style. Students are evaluated for their learning style and explore how to put it to use.

Accepted participants will be contacted by email (via TheSwede.me) when they are enrolled into the workshop. They will then be directed to a weblink for questionnaire materials that must be finished 24 hours before the seminar date, otherwise attendance is forfeited.

THIS SEMINAR IS LIMITED TO 15 PEOPLE IN EACH SECTION ON A FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE BASIS. If you are registered you must give 48 HOURS NOTICE OF CANCELLATION, otherwise a $50 CANCELLATION FEE will be charged to your account. This allows students on a waiting list to be able to attend. By signing up you agree to these terms.

THIS SEMINAR IS 2 ½ HOURS. (Interested students must sign up in advance at the reception desk.)

Test Anxiety

This seminar explores the roots of test anxiety from a physiological and emotional approach.

We will explore the role of the mind in controlling anxiety and run-away thoughts and their stressful effects.

Participants will learn basic meditation techniques and physical exercises to help control stressful physiological responses.

We will consider the role of right spirit in centering and affirming yourself as you approach your tests and exams. Where is the source of your confidence and self-esteem regarding test taking and grades? How can you strengthen your sense of compassion and kindness toward yourself?

Participants will engage in creative written exercises to explore the hidden issues and negative scripts that are often unconsciously internalized from past educational experiences.

A willingness (and courage) to explore the hidden emotional aspects of test anxiety is a requisite for attending this seminar.

THIS SEMINAR IS 2 ½ HOURS. (Interested students must sign up in advance at the reception desk.)
