The Swedish Institute Celebrates 90 Years in New York City
On Sunday, November 12, 2006, Swedish Institute alumni and faculty gathered
to reconnect at what was the school’s first formal reunion since opening its
doors 90 years ago. In attendance were graduates from the classes of 1967 through
2006, all of whom are still active in the field. Over light fare, nearly 200
attendees shared anecdotes, dispensed advice and compared notes on what they
have been doing since their graduations.
Faculty and Staff Honored
Honored during the anniversary festivities were four people who have been at the
Swedish Institute for more than 25 years: Lucy Liben, Dean of the Massage Therapy
Program (28 years); Bob Altheim, faculty member for both the Massage Therapy and
Acupuncture Programs (30 years); Jill Thompson, Director of Academic Support
Services for the Massage Therapy Program (28 years); and Yick Pon Huey, Dean for
Administration and Operations (32 years). In acknowledging these long time
members of the school community, faculty member Michael Alicia said, “We have
all gotten where we are because we have been able to stand on the shoulders of
these strong individuals, the teachers and staff who are truly the school.”

Today, with programs in massage therapy, acupuncture and personal training,
the Swedish Institute is everything it started out as and more. About 700
students now attend classes and thousands who have graduated have gone on to
bring the benefits of these modalities to people all over the world.
