Massage Therapy faculty member Geoff Dawe, L.M.T. gave a talk on spa services on March 6, 2006. As usual, a standing-room only crowd listened to Dawe’s description of his work as head of the massage therapy department at the five-star Peninsula Spa in Manhattan. Dawe discussed on-the-job expectations, compensation packages available to therapists, medical benefits and much more, all delivered with his usual verve.

On March 6, 2006, students were invited to a free discussion and demonstration of medical Qi Gong presented by Sat Chuen Hon, MFA.

Mr. Hon is an expert in medical Qi Gong, Taiji Quan and classical Chinese medicine. He is the founder of the New York Dan Tao Center and author of Taoist Qigong for Health and Vitality. We were honored to have Mr. Hon give this presentation, which was a preview for a class he taught through our Professional Continuing Education Department.

Massage Therapy and Integrative Medicine

Hanna Weare, M.A., L.M.T., Niamh Van Meines, R.N.P., L.M.T. and Jane Green, R.N., L.M.T. join students to share their use of massage therapy within integrative therapies programs in hospitals and other medical settings on March 28, 2005. All three therapists have been professionally trained in other health care modalities (nursing and social work) and aim to approach healing from a truly integrative perspective.

Hanna Weare and Jane Green are on staff at the Integrative Medicine Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City and Niamh Van Meines works as a nurse practitioner at Jacob Perlow Hospice in New York.

Body/Mind Healing: Where Psychotherapy & Bodywork Meet

A discussion with massage therapists Ellen Krueger, M.S., L.M.T. and Deborah Adamy, C.S.W., L.M.T., who combine bodywork with their training in psychotherapy to integrate physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of their clients, took place on November 8, 2004. Topics covered include: touch as contact, the therapeutic relationship, working with imagery, the meaning behind physical symptoms, healing trauma and the transpersonal approach (spiritual dimensions) essential to healing and growth.

Krueger is the director and co-founder of the Soma-Psyche Institute, and has over 18 years experience in teaching certified Polarity trainings and Body Centered Counseling programs. She is an instructor in the Swedish Institute's Massage Therapy Program and has a private practice in Manhattan and Cold Springs, New York.

Adamy combines her professional experience as a dancer, psychotherapist, massage therapist, professional development trainer and consultant in her private practice. A graduate of the Swedish Institute, she believes that an understanding of the deep wisdom of the body is an inherent part of the healing process.

Massage Therapy alumnus Tom Bisio ('85) returned for a lunchtime forum on October 29, 2004 to discuss his work as a practitioner and author of a newly released book, A Tooth from the Tiger's Mouth (Simon & Schuster). Bisio's background as a massage therapist, martial artist and acupuncturist led to his expertise in Tuina (clinical Chinese massage) and external applications, which are the focus of his book. He explained the value of Tuina and its role in treating the muscular terrain of Chinese medicine.

Bisio returned later in the day for a more in-depth discussion about the role of Tuina in Chinese medicine and how he combines it with acupuncture, external applications and herbal therapy. He provided demonstrations of technique and answered questions about his work as a practitioner.

Bisio has a private practice in New York City and has taught advanced Tuina across the country.
