Program Schedule

The next offering of this program begins September 2008.

Term 1: Basic Exercise Science

The first 10-week term presents physiological principles and hands-on skills for designing and implementing exercise programs for health-related fitness. It prepares students for entry-level national certification examinations for personal trainers and exercise instructors.

Introduction to Exercise Testing and Prescription

Thursdays, September 4 to November 6, 2008

Term 2: Advanced Personal Training

In the second part of the program students begin to move into the skills needed to work with special populations, such as people seeking weight control or reduction, those with orthopedic injuries or controlled disease such as diabetes or hypertension, and/or athletes seeking to enhance their performance beyond health-related fitness parameters.

There are three courses in this term:

Graded Exercise Testing and Metabolic Equations

Meets for the first 5 weeks.

Tuesdays, January 6 to February 3, 2009

Concepts in Nutrition for Weight Control

Meets for the second 5 weeks.

Tuesdays, February 10 to March 10, 2009

1:15 pm to 5:15 pm

Program Design with Intermediate to Advanced Exercise Prescription

Meets for 10 weeks.

Thursdays, January 8 to March 12, 2009

1:15 pm to 5:15 pm

Prerequisite Basic Science Classes

Prerequisites: Basic Science

All Personal Training Program students must have at least 16 credits of basic science prerequisites that consist of the following four classes:

Anatomy and Physiology I

Myology and Kinesiology

Neurology

Anatomy and Physiology II

Applicants who do not meet the basic science requirements may take these classes within the Swedish Institute's Massage Therapy Program, which has a 15-week semester.

Students can choose either a morning, afternoon or evening/Saturday schedule for the basic science courses. They can take two classes per semester. These class can be taken either prior to or concurrently with the Personal Training Program.

Morning classes: 8:30 am to 12:30 pm
One class from 8:30 am to 9:30 am

Two classes from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm

Afternoon Schedule*

Semester I
Two classes from 1:15 pm to 5:15 pm
One class from 1:15 pm to 2:15 pm

Semester II
Two classes from 1:15 pm to 5:15 pm

Evening/Saturday Schedule*

Semester I
Two classes from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm
One class from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm

Semester II
One evening class from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm
One Saturday class from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm
