A clinician should cultivate the ways of Heaven and Earth, understand the dynamics of the human spirit, and ponder the depths of Nature. One will then grasp the Tao.

Message from the Dean for Academic Affairs

Dear Prospective Student,

It is my belief, as Dean for Academic Affairs for the Acupuncture Program and a Taoist priest, that healing is a vocation meant to be undertaken by those who have a genuine concern for the welfare of people. Those who aspire to do this work also need to have a deep conviction of compassionate outreach to the sick, as well as a willingness to create dialogues with other health care practitioners.

Our curriculum was created to address the growing interest in Classical Chinese Acupuncture, a collective term that pertains to the various traditions stemming from Taoist roots, governed by principles outlined in ancient texts such as the Nei Jing (Inner Treatise). This approach covers philosophical, psychological and theological aspects of Oriental medicine rarely conveyed in schools across the country, and even abroad. It includes the changing styles of acupuncture, up to and including the modern theory known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) which was synthesized in China during the 1950's.

As students learn the different approaches of acupuncturists through the ages, they come to understand how medicine changes as a response to the political, environmental, social and economic forces of the times. As practitioners, they will expect medicine to continue to evolve, and will participate in a way that acknowledges a world where change is constant.

I invite you to visit our school so you can gain a better understanding of our program, our faculty and staff, and the qualities our students develop as they learn and practice acupuncture here.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey C. Yuen

Dean for Academic Affairs
