Clinical Experience

The Yu Wen Clinic at the Swedish Institute provides low cost acupuncture sessions for the community and provides students the opportunity to practice their growing clinical skills. The clinic is named in honor of Yu Wen, an 86th generation Taoist priest from the Jade Purity Sect and the grandfather of Jeffrey C. Yuen, our Dean for Academic Affairs. Yu Wen's approach to acupuncture was to work towards "unraveling people's hearts so they can see themselves in the light of their own truth." Jeffrey C. Yuen, also a Taoist priest, infuses the curriculum and clinical approach to treatment with the same reverence for individuals and their innate ability to heal.

Students begin their work in clinic through the practice of observing, then assisting and eventually practicing under supervision. As clinical interns they will assess and treat patients with a wide array of conditions that may involve the respiratory, digestive, reproductive, cardiovascular or musculoskeletal systems of the body.

Offsite Clinics

In addition to the clinics at the Institute, students have the opportunity to provide acupuncture at Montefiore Medical Center's Department of Family Services Pain Management Clinic, and a specialty clinic for the treatment of symptoms related to infectious diseases. There is also an offsite clinic at the Aids Center of Queens County, where ear acupuncture is practiced in a community setting to patients with HIV related conditions.
